The name tantalum is derived from the mythological Greek god Tantalus. Tantalus must pay eternally for his mistakes. Standing up to his lips in water, he is unable to obtain the enticing food and drink; the Tantalus torment.
The processing of tantalum is similar to that torment. It demands the utmost of us. Tools quickly become blunt or break, polishing brushes make no impression and provide hardly any shine. The impossible editing does impress Jan. Combined with white gold and diamonds, the tantalum produces an award-winning ring; a 1st prize plus an honorable mention in the National Diamond Competition 1981. The die has been cast and more tantalum jewelry follows. The collaboration with Pauline Barendse from 1995 makes the tantalum spark jump.
While the processing options were limited in the beginning, laser processing is used later. Laser experiments lead to combinations and decorations with gold. The dark tantalum contrasts fantastically with the warm gold color.
Tantalum, like titanium, is particularly suitable for jewellery. Both metals are non-toxic and biologically inert, the human body does not reject them.
